Hurricane Update #2

Hey everybody,

The eye of the hurricane went over us at about 10:30 last night and we lost power right before that. Power is still out and will be for the next four or five days. Many of the upper floors of my building don't have running water, hoping that doesn't trickle down to our floor.

My roommate and I are mooching off a friend with power so we can charge all our various electronics.
I'm fine and the area I'm in is fine! Can't say the same for most of Manhattan though, it's pretty scary.

Most of these are via www.nytimes.com..... I have my own pictures but I don't want to waste batteries uploading and editing them, so here's a bunch I've collected via the internet.

nytimes also has a really good live update feed. check it out if you can.

I'm a little nervous and frazzled but otherwise very safe. Thanks for all the well wishes.

Hurricane Update #1

As of now, everything's still pretty peaceful. The storm is supposed to really hit between like 6 and 8 tonight and continue into tomorrow.

A lot of people who were here for Irene are skeptical of the magnitude of this bitch, but you can't really argue with that picture (Irene's on the left, Sandy on the right)

We have to have a sense of humor about these things people.....

NYU cancelled classes today and tomorrow and I won't be surprised if we're out Wednesday as well. The power is supposedly getting shut off in the next few hours as a preventative measure, so tech availability will have to be super limited. I'll try to keep everybody posted.

stay safe.

Sand in my Pants

Hey! I had two posts I was planning to put together over the last few days but things got pretty crazy with Hurricane Sandy coming in.

The storm is supposed to hit New York early tomorrow morning, but it's already very cloudy and windy. All mass transit is shutting down around 7 pm and NYU cancelled classes for tomorrow and probably Tuesday as well.

I spent most of yesterday and the first part of today running around getting water, food, and a back up charger for my phone. The lines for grocery stores are going out the doors an around blocks. Everybody's freaking out a little bit!!

They've evacuated a lot of lower Manhattan because it's essentially at sea level, but no news on where I am yet. Hopefully I'll get to stay in my bed!

#you'rewelcome

I'll try to keep posting as long as I have internet and power!
To everybody on the East coast, stay SAFE.
 hugs.

Big Girl Things

Hey look!! I exercised my rights!!!

Super excited to vote for the first time. I won't tell you I voted for, but I will tell you that I like education, equal marriage, and birth control..... bet ya didn't see that coming.

I don't care if you think it doesn't matter, or if you don't like either candidate. Vote for an independent for all I care, but if I can go through the slightly confusing process of getting that ballot sent from Tennessee to New York, you can GET YOUR ASS UP AND VOTE.

In addition:
1. please note the Bob Fosse stamp on my ballot.
2. please enjoy some vintage schoolhouse rock.

That's all.

The Roster

I swear I feel like last Wednesday was two days ago....

But the happies continue!!!

1) Comfort Food:

One of the best parts of my dad and stepmom coming to see me was I got to go grocery shopping. Groceries in NYC are NOT CHEAP AT ALL YA'LL. I feel so bad about how much he spent on me (there and in general) but I have real food and I am so so happy.

tomato basil soup, grilled cheese, and fresh strawberries (((:

2) Halloween Decorating (or nesting as my mother calls it):

It is not a holiday unless there is a damn wreath on the door. My grandmother puts one up for EVERYTHING like, including the fourth of July and St. Patrick's Day. I made this one myself with some stuff my mom sent me.... It's not quite Nashville status, but it makes me smile.

3) Sushi Zen:

Dad, Martha, and I went here before we saw Once.... Hands down the best sushi I have ever had. Everything was incredibly fresh and they weren't stingy at all with the amount of fish in the rolls, which is such a rarity. It was incredible. Thanks Dad!!!!

seaweed salad

Dad's plate: spicy tuna and striped tuna sashimi

hot fudge cake (with gold leaf!) with vanilla bean ice cream
Sushi Zen is on West 44th between 6th and 7th Ave. New Yorkers, take yo parents.

4) Lovelies from My Sister:

I swear to go my sister is Martha Stewart, Giuliana Rancic, and Superwoman all rolled into one. She sent me the sweetest (and cutest) care package ever. If you're in Nashville go pick up Nashville Lifestyle's Wedding's right now!!! If you don't, we aren't friends anymore.

Check out the Nashville Lifestyle's website too!

5) Into the Gloss:

Into the Gloss has quickly become one of my favorite reads. They have this section called the Top Shelf where they interview all kinds of people in the fashion world about their beauty regimen's and preferences. It's so interesting to see how different women approach beauty. My personal favorite interviews were Dita Von Teese, Erin Wasson, Leigh Lezark, and Iris Apfel.

6) Smiles from India:

So, I love this blog, and I love that people are reading it. There are things about the path that I've chosen that are difficult, but all in all I live a very privileged and cushioned life. But there are a lot bigger things going on. While I'm out gallivanting around New York, my dear friend Hannah Dobie is in India trying to make the world better. Instead of having a typical first year out of high school, she has joined up with Operation Smile and is spending the year in India helping hundreds, probably thousands of people, and she's keeping an amazing blog that chronicles her experiences. So for every click you give my blog, please give hers two. It's a lot more important than what lipstick I wore today.

Smiles from India

Hope you're not coming down with a cold like I am....
Happy Wednesday!

hugs.

Man-nequin

I'm finally growing out my pixie, and while right now it's a really awkward mullet, I'm trying to milk my last few months of androgyny. Sometimes it's nice to be a little slouchy, it's a very different kind of sexy.

One of my favorite get ups in a while!

Meet the New Yorker

My Dad and stepmom Martha came to see me this weekend!!! I got to show them around NYU and convince them that I'm not going to get abducted or anything and they bought me lots of nice food and took me to shows.

We also saw my sister and her husband for approximately two seconds. They were here with Brent's parents to go to the football game, but they met us for lunch which was nice.

Here are some highlights.

One of the most incredible shows I've ever seen.

Dad thought it would be a good idea to get a bike taxi????

Potato Waffle Benedict at The Smith

I was so so happy to see my Dad. He's been so incredibly supportive since I moved here, which is saying a lot when your career is as viscous and objective as mine is. Really means a lot to me.... Can't wait to see them both again at Thanksgiving!!!

Poppin'

This blog has made me an unabashed selfie queen. Sorry 'bout it.

I've been messing around with different lip colors this week. One of the very few perks of a long distance relationship- you can wear lipstick whenever the hell you want.

Both are by Revlon. The first one is called "Wild Orchid" and the second one "Kiss Me Coral"

Wahoo for being trendy.

Have a great weekend!!!

The Roster

Sorry for the slight delay... My bed was just too comfy this morning.

Here are my happies this week.

1) The weird Ben & Jerry's flavors:

I don't know why, but the store downstairs in my dorm has the strangest Ben & Jerry's flavors. And by strange I mean wonderful. Top favorites so far are Boston Cream Pie and Willie Nelson's Peach Cobbler.

2) My first momma care package:

My mother does infamous care packages. And her first Halloween themed one (that also included tomato soup, gummy vitamins (because she knows I won't take real ones) and the first season of True Blood), did not disappoint.

3) Honeymamma letters:

I write my grandmother as often as I can, which still isn't often enough and this woman sends back NOVELS. Best quote so far "in the morning after I say my prayers I watch Good Morning America, but all this election talk gives me the willies, so I just watch the hummingbirds or watch Eli Manning instead."

4) Perks of Being a Wallflower:

RUN TO YOUR NEAREST THEATER PEOPLE. RUNNNNNNN..

I cried hysterically. Both times I saw it.

5) Being adventurous:

I found this article on Pinterest. It's tips that a former J. Crew stylist gave while teaching a seminar (wish I could have gone!!!) It really inspired me to switch things up a bit.

Here's my attempt.
{vintage blazer, forever 21 shirt, american apparel skinnies, frye boots, target scarf, j.crew bangles}

I see like half my family on Friday!! So excited!
Happy rest of your week!

Hugs.

Frequent Flyer

I am relishing in the last couple hours of fall break, then it's back to real life until Thanksgiving.

I flew to Charlotte Friday night to see Evan! It's so funny that we didn't see each other for seven weeks and then we saw each other two weekends in a row. It completely spoiled us, but I'm not complaining.

His cousin's Jim and Kelly were really sweet and let us stay in their (very nice) house and were really generous. Thanks Jim and Kelly!! Evan's aunt made homemade spaghetti the first night was there and Evan and I stuffed our faces because Ramen sucks and homemade spaghetti doesn't. It was basically a food marathon all weekend.

It was weird to be back in the South. Not bad weird, just weird. I had to adjust to everything being spread out and quiet again.

We made s'mores Saturday night and I was the happiest girl ever.

Leaving that boy will never not suck. It's literally the worst thing in the world. But I was so happy I got to see him, even for just a bit.

I can't lie though, coming back to New York already feels like coming home. I guess you can have a couple homes at one time, one here, one in Charlotte, and always one in Nashville.

Evan and Abby Take New York: the rest of it

Saturday night we went to Wicked! I know it's kind of cliche... but it's my favorite and it always will be. It was the sixth time I've seen the show and it was Evan's first Broadway show ever. I got really excited and know-it-ally and he sat and acted like everything I said was thrilling and it was great.

The show was incredible. One of the best casts I've seen and I've seen a few.

{vintage dress and belt, Steve Madden wedges, Marc Jacobs purse}
I'm all hunched over because it was like 45 degrees and I took my coat off for about two seconds to get the picture.

Boyfriend cleans up well. And obliged for a picture. And then laughed at me.

The next morning we went to Locanda Verde for brunch, the same place my sister and I went for dinner a while ago. It was INCREDIBLE OH MY GOD.

lemon ricotta pancakes.

 overwhelmed by nom.

I like brunch because you can eat breakfast food and dessert.....

Sunday night we went to the street fair that happens every weekend and went to the Highline and explored around Chelsea and the meatpacking district. I love that area so much.

It was hands down the best weekend since I've moved here. It was such a relief to see each other and realize that this is really working. And I'm going to Charlotte tomorrow!!!! Definitely getting spoiled.

Evan and Abby Take New York: Part 3

Sorry I've been slow to get all of these up. I've had midterms this week and have crashed every night. I have like a two hour break right now between nine hours of studio and seeing a show for my Theater Studies class so consider this an act of love!

Anyway, after the park we went to MoMA with some of my friends. Evan's a photo whore.

 photobombing....

Thanks to Mina for snapping some of these!
