New York Noons

I had a post planned for Saturday, but I got food poisoning and was decked. Sorry for the wait.

I was already an avid patron of all black before I moved here, but now it's bordering on extreme. All black outfits at least three times a week. Nothing feels quite as sophisticated or as quintessential New York.

{Urban sweater, American Apparel skirt, Target tights, Forver 21 belt, J.Crew and vintage necklaces}

I'm really sorry I only make that one face in every picture ever. I don't know why.

Something (else) Wicked This Way Comes

So, if the record breaking Hurricane doesn't keep you out of New York, the record breaking snow storm will.

Yesterday's nor-easter was apparently the biggest snowstorm to hit the Northeast in the month of November EVER. Or so I've been told.

This was a rude awakening to my Nashville sensibilities. In Nashville, snow is a really good excuse to not go anywhere, in New York, it's a damn challenge. CHALLENGE ACCEPTED NY. GET AT ME.

To stay warm and comfy in the cold I've been relying on my uniform of big sweaters and black skinnies. I like that these both below have a twist to them: the back of the sweater and the waxed finish of the jeans (you can't really tell in the crappy cell pics.) I like keeping myself interested.

IT'S ALMOST THE WEEKEND YAY.

The Roster

The Roster is back!!!!

Here are some happies for this very rainy day.

1) The Cold:

This is kind of a half happy, because the cold kind of sucks, but coats, scarves, boots, and hats do not.

Trying to learn how to layer for the city!

2) Bring It On the musical:

THIS WAS FANTASTIC. It closes soon so go see it if you can. It's ridiculous the things these people do with their bodies. And the music was pretty good which I wasn't expecting. Go go go!!!!
Neil from So You Think You Can Dance!!!! He was a great addition to the cast
Andy and I before the show.
{Free People lace dress}

3) Pomme Frites:

This place is literally ten steps from the Tisch Dance building (oh the irony). They have these amazing fresh fries and a million different sauces that you can try. We got the rosemary garlic mayo.

Nom Nom Nom. Carbo-load

4) Cure Thrift Shop:

This is like two blocks from my dorm. It's an impressively well curated thrift shop with some of the best home-ware and furniture that I've seen. Plus, profits benefit Diabetes research. Check out their website here.

Pretty things that I want for my future apartment
BE STILL MY HEART

5) Yoga to the People:

AWESOME FREE YOGA. Super trendy, super free, and super close to where I live. There's nothing like being packed in a room with fifty sweaty hipsters to make you feel the New York spirit.

Real life New York City yogi
{Lululemon leggings, Splits59 pullover and tank, adidas sneaks, Lululemon duffel}

Feels good to be posting again!!
Hope everybody is dry and warm.

hugs.

Neighborhood Tour

Okay this is my last Sandy post I swear.

On Tuesday, when the storm had passed, I walked around my neighborhood for a bit. The damage in my area is fairly minimal, just lots of limbs down and stuff. So in no way are these pictures representative of the real damage Sandy did, turn on the news to see that. But this is what happened near me. With the power out and people acting so crazy, I didn't feel safe going more than about five blocks from my dorm.

thanks, I guess?

leaves e'rywhere

the sky remained very ominous

the really pretty park and church I walk by every day on my way to dance classes. it got pretty ravaged

walk at your own risk. stop lights were out too

no papers for us!

New York pigeons are resilient

and remember, that's how strong the wind was the day after

Hurricane Update #3

Hey everybody,
I'm sorry it's taken me so long to post, but last week was really overwhelming and once I was finally out of the city with power and internet I just needed a break.....

Power went out this time on Monday last week and came back on Saturday night. My dorm doesn't have heat or hot water but I got a little space heater so I'm doing okay.

Blacked out downtown was pretty scary, so I got out of NYC Thursday morning and stayed with Evan in Charlotte until this morning. It was his birthday on Friday and I was planning on coming anyway as a surprise, so I just went a day early (but the surprise got ruined ) : sorry babe). His brother and best friend came up as well and we had a really great time. It took me a couple days to really calm down.

Classes started back up today and everybody is trying to get back to normal, including this blog!! I have one more hurricane related post coming, but then I'll get back to my normal routine, including a long overdue Roster on Wednesday.

Here's a bunch of random cell phone shots from last week.....

ominous skies on Sunday before Sandy hit

K Mart completely sold out of everything battery powered and useful

a very black downtown.... it stayed like this from Monday until Saturday, everything below about 40th st

Anna on our 75 block, 6 mile trek uptown for a place to charge our laptops and a hot shower. Thanks CJ!!

little boy oogling some destruction on the Upper West Side

a still very scary sky on my way out on Thursday

the best part of the whole entire week

Sandy sucked (and is still sucking in a lot of ways) for me, but it was really just inconveniences. There are thousands of people who's lives were really affected by this and it's hard to see that in your own city. I already made a donation to the Red Cross and I encourage everybody to do the same. Hope everybody is safe, dry, and warm.

hugs from NYC.

Hurricane Update #2

Hey everybody,

The eye of the hurricane went over us at about 10:30 last night and we lost power right before that. Power is still out and will be for the next four or five days. Many of the upper floors of my building don't have running water, hoping that doesn't trickle down to our floor.

My roommate and I are mooching off a friend with power so we can charge all our various electronics.
I'm fine and the area I'm in is fine! Can't say the same for most of Manhattan though, it's pretty scary.

line of ambulances last night trying to get into the hospital

part of Queens

Manhattan bridge (all of downtown (right side) is without power)

 Subway station in Brooklyn

Water rushing into the Ground Zero construction site.

LaGuardia airport

Most of these are via www.nytimes.com..... I have my own pictures but I don't want to waste batteries uploading and editing them, so here's a bunch I've collected via the internet.

nytimes also has a really good live update feed. check it out if you can.

I'm a little nervous and frazzled but otherwise very safe. Thanks for all the well wishes.

hugs.

Hurricane Update #1

As of now, everything's still pretty peaceful. The storm is supposed to really hit between like 6 and 8 tonight and continue into tomorrow.

A lot of people who were here for Irene are skeptical of the magnitude of this bitch, but you can't really argue with that picture (Irene's on the left, Sandy on the right)

We have to have a sense of humor about these things people.....

NYU cancelled classes today and tomorrow and I won't be surprised if we're out Wednesday as well. The power is supposedly getting shut off in the next few hours as a preventative measure, so tech availability will have to be super limited. I'll try to keep everybody posted.

stay safe.
hugs.
